The Mirage 2000-5F entered French service in the late 1990s as an upgraded air-defence version of the Mirage 2000, replacing earlier interceptor variants with modern radar and MICA missile capability. It has been deployed on NATO air policing missions and in the defence of French airspace. The Mirage 2000D entered service in 1993 as a dedicated precision strike aircraft and has seen extensive combat, including Operation Harmattan over Libya in 2011, where it carried out precision air strikes against ground targets as part of the NATO-led intervention.
