The Sukhoi Su-27 “Flanker” has been a cornerstone of Ukrainian Air Force air defense since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. Inherited from the Soviet Union, Ukrainian Su-27s were adapted to national service and later repainted in distinctive blue-and-grey camouflage, symbolizing Ukraine’s sovereignty. Operated primarily by frontline tactical aviation brigades, the Su-27 has served as Ukraine’s primary long-range air superiority fighter, tasked with protecting national airspace and conducting air-policing missions. The aircraft’s Ukrainian Air Force livery has since become an iconic representation of modern Ukrainian military aviation.
