The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the U.S. Navy’s premier fleet defense fighter from the 1970s through the early 2000s, renowned for its variable-sweep wings and long-range missile capability. VF-41 “Black Aces,” based at NAS Oceana, was one of the Navy’s most famous Tomcat squadrons and played a historic role in combat aviation. In August 1981, VF-41 achieved the first-ever air-to-air kills by an F-14, when two Black Aces Tomcats shot down Libyan Su-22 fighters over the Gulf of Sidra. The squadron’s distinctive black-tailed livery and ace-of-spades insignia have since made the Black Aces one of the most iconic F-14 units in naval aviation history.
